Principles of Healthy Child Development 4-hour (PHCD 4-hour)

The Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) is a 4-hour training that equips front-line leaders (anyone working with children aged 4 to 12) with the tools to immediately enhance the quality of their programs. The training provides valuable information, resources, and techniques to ensure that each child's social, emotional, and cognitive needs are met. 

Learner Outcomes
At the completion of this training, learners will be able to:

  • create meaningful relationships with the children in their programs by using the activities, information on child development, and resources provided in the training; 
  • speak a common language with their fellow staff that is based on prioritizing the developmental needs of the child; and
  • develop a child-centred program.

Participants who successfully complete this training in full will receive a certificate and are provided with an additional complimentary online training, Healthy Minds for Healthy Children.

Principles of Healthy Child Development Modules

Three modules have been developed to complement PHCD 4-hour.

Communicating with Empathy

  • This module highlights various techniques and tips to help frontline leaders navigate communication with children, parents/caregivers, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Highlights Include: understanding and practicing the principles of empathetic listening and communication, understanding how be an active listener and how non-verbal communication influences a conversation.
  • Learners will also have access to the HIGH FIVE® Database to download additional resources and receive a toolkit during training which will become a resource they can refer to throughout their time working/volunteering in recreation programs.

Introduction to Bullying and Conflict Resolution

  • This module highlights new strategies created by HIGH FIVE®. The Caring Code and S.A.F.E. strategies help CARING LEADERS support children in solution seeking and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Highlights include: conflict assessment, creating child-centred environments and defining bullying.
  • Learners will also have access to the HIGH FIVE® Database to download additional resources and receive a toolkit during training which will become a resource they can refer to throughout their time working/volunteering in recreation programs.

Planning Quality Programs

  • This module highlights how to create an activity plan that reflects the HIGH FIVE® Principles and Design Guidelines.
  • Highlights include: learning to plan quality games and activities and supporting CARING LEADERS in the ability to make modifications and adaptations in activities.
  • Learners will also have access to the HIGH FIVE® Database to download additional resources and receive a toolkit during training which will become a resource they can refer to throughout their time working/volunteering in recreation programs.
